For the last year or so, I’ve been seconded to the Malawi Police Service as part of an Irish nonprofit’s work on rule of law and access to justice issues, particularly with an emphasis on children in conflict with the law. I spend my days checking police cells for children suspects (under 18) who’ve committed divertible offenses and try to push diversion and for adult suspects who have been held longer than 48 hours without a bail hearing. I also administer 15-20 trainings a year on the proper treatment of children in conflict with the law. Lately I’ve been trying to work on what I can do with a lot of the data I collect to build models of police activity in Malawi and to give that data back to the police in a digestible way. I’m hoping to use RightsCon as an opportunity to learn from and connect with others related to this and other ideas/projects.
